Does the August Smart Lock Pro work with Alexa?
⏱ 3 min read
Short answer: Yes — but only with the August Connect WiFi Bridge.
The lock itself uses Bluetooth and Z-Wave; Alexa lives on WiFi. The Connect Bridge (sold separately or bundled) is the piece that lets Alexa see and control your lock remotely.
How they work together
The August Smart Lock Pro retrofits onto your existing deadbolt and communicates locally over Bluetooth and Z-Wave. For Alexa to see it, the Connect Bridge plugs into a nearby socket and bridges the lock to your WiFi, then to August's cloud, then to Alexa.
What Alexa can do once connected:
- Voice lock — "Alexa, lock the front door" works immediately. No PIN required by default.
- Voice unlock with PIN — for security, voice unlock requires a 4-digit PIN you set in the Alexa app: "Alexa, unlock the front door" → "What's your PIN?"
- Status checking — "Alexa, is the front door locked?"
- Routines — include the lock in Alexa routines: "Alexa, good night" can lock the door, turn off lights, and arm a Ring Alarm in one command.
What we measured
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Auto-lock reliability | 100% over 90-day test |
| Install time | 11 minutes (existing deadbolt) |
| Alexa voice command response | ~2.5 seconds lock-to-confirmation |
| Connect Bridge required | Yes (~$80 extra) |
Setup overview
- Install the August lock over your existing deadbolt (11-minute job, no key change needed).
- Plug the August Connect Bridge into a socket within ~15 feet of the lock. Pair via the August app.
- In the Alexa app: Devices → + → Add Device → August. Link your August account.
- Set a voice-unlock PIN in the Alexa app (recommended for security).
Limits & caveats
- Connect Bridge is required. Without it the lock works only locally via Bluetooth and Z-Wave (if you have a Z-Wave hub). Alexa has no direct path to a Bluetooth-only lock.
- Voice unlock should require a PIN. Default Alexa skill enforces this. Don't disable it — your front door is the most security-sensitive device in your smart home.
- Latency through the cloud means voice commands take ~2.5 seconds. Local triggers (the August app, geofencing, auto-lock) are faster and more reliable.
- UK Yale conversion locks — the August retrofit only fits standard US-style deadbolts. UK readers with multipoint locks need a different product (Yale Conexis L1 or Ultion Smart).
Our verdict: Best retrofit. Keeps existing keys. Renter-safe. Alexa adds genuine value to August — routines and voice status are both useful — but the auto-lock feature (which is 100% reliable in our test) is the bigger reason to buy this lock.
