Nest vs Ecobee 2026 — Which Smart Thermostat Should You Choose?

Last Updated: May 21, 2026  |  Both Tested: 3 months each  |  Real Energy Data: Yes

After testing both for 3 months in the same type of home, here is the honest answer: Ecobee if you use HomeKit or want room sensors. Nest if you're in Google ecosystem and care about design and learning. Neither is wrong — they serve different priorities.

Energy Savings: Our 3-Month Test Results

Both thermostats were tested in similar homes with similar baseline heating habits over a full 3-month period. Energy bills were compared against the same period in the prior year, normalised for outdoor temperature differences.

Why Ecobee saves more: The included room sensor means it heats based on the room you're in — not the hallway where the thermostat is mounted. In a home where the thermostat is in a cold draught-prone hallway, this alone accounts for the 3% difference.

The HomeKit Question

This is the decisive factor for many buyers. the Nest 4th Gen now supports Apple Home via Matter (older models did not) and has publicly stated it will not add it. Ecobee supports HomeKit natively.

If you have a HomePod, Apple TV, or any HomeKit devices and want your thermostat integrated: Ecobee is the only viable choice between these two. Nest simply doesn't work in HomeKit.

Design and Display

Nest genuinely has the better-designed thermostat. The circular form factor, premium metal finish, and Farsight feature (display activates when you approach) make it feel like an intentional design object. Ecobee's rectangular screen with touchpad buttons is functional but not beautiful.

If your thermostat is a focal point in a well-decorated room, this matters. If it's in a utility area, it doesn't.

Learning Algorithm

Nest's learning algorithm is more impressive. After one week in our test, it had built an accurate schedule based purely on observation — we didn't manually program anything. Ecobee learned faster (4 days to useful accuracy vs 7 for Nest) but Nest's final learned schedule felt more intuitive, accounting for weekend vs weekday patterns more precisely.

The Verdict

Choose Ecobee if:

  • You use Apple HomeKit
  • Different rooms in your home are different temperatures
  • You want maximum energy savings
  • You want built-in Alexa at the thermostat
  • You don't have a C-wire (Ecobee's adapter is more reliable)

Choose Nest if:

  • You're embedded in Google ecosystem (Nest cameras, speakers etc.)
  • Design is important (Nest is significantly more attractive)
  • You want the best passive learning algorithm
  • Your thermostat is in a single representative location
  • UK home without HomeKit (Nest has a proper UK version)

FAQ

Can I switch between Nest and Ecobee without a new installation?

Yes. Both use the same wiring terminals as standard thermostats. Swapping between them is a 20-minute job — disconnect the wires (photograph first), attach to the new backplate, reconnect. Both include installation guides in their apps.

Does Ecobee work without the room sensor?

Yes — it works as a standard smart thermostat without the sensor. The room sensor is what differentiates it from Nest. If your thermostat is in a central, representative location, the sensor adds less value.

Is there a Nest thermostat that supports HomeKit?

No, and there is unlikely to be. Google has consistently declined to add HomeKit support to Nest products. Third-party workarounds (Homebridge) exist but are unofficial, complex, and unreliable. If you need HomeKit, choose Ecobee.
