Alexa Routines Guide 2026 — Complete Setup and Best Examples

Last Updated: May 21, 2026  |  Routines Covered: 20+

Alexa Routines turn your smart home from reactive (you tell it what to do) to proactive (it does things automatically). This guide covers setup, the best routines worth creating, and advanced techniques most guides miss.

2025 Smart Home Guide — Alexa Routines and Automation

What Is an Alexa Routine?

A Routine is a sequence of actions that runs automatically when triggered. One voice command, one scheduled time, one event — many actions in response. They're created in the Alexa app under More → Routines.

The 6 Trigger Types

TriggerExampleBest For
Voice"Alexa, I'm home"Multi-action shortcuts
ScheduleEvery day at 7amMorning/evening routines
Smart HomeMotion sensor triggersAutomated responses to events
LocationWhen you arrive/leave homeAway mode, arrival routines

The 20 Best Routines to Create

Morning Routines

🌅 1. Good Morning (Voice trigger: "Alexa, good morning")

Actions in sequence: Kitchen lights on at 60% → Warm white colour temperature → Thermostat up to 21°C → Alexa announces today's weather + calendar → Coffee machine on (if on smart plug)

Setup: More → Routines → + → Voice → "good morning" → Add Action → Add as many actions as needed → Save

⏰ 2. Alarm Wake Routine (Triggered by: your Alexa alarm)

Actions: Bedroom light gradually brightens from 0% to 80% over 5 minutes (simulates sunrise) → Plays gentle music for 5 minutes → Announces the weather

Why it works: Waking to gradually brightening light is measurably better for sleep quality than an alarm sound. Alexa can dim-up smart bulbs over any time period.

Evening Routines

🌇 3. Sunset Lighting (Triggered by: Sunset)

Actions: Living room lights on at 60% warm white → Hallway light on at 40% → Kitchen under-cabinet lights on

Runs automatically every day. Adjusts daily with the seasons without any input from you. One of the highest-value automations in any smart home.

🌙 4. Goodnight (Voice: "Alexa, goodnight")

Actions: All lights off → Front door locked → Thermostat to 18°C → Echo announces "Goodnight, alarm is set for 7am" → Guard mode on

One phrase replaces 5-6 individual actions. Set this up on day one.

📺 5. Movie Mode (Voice: "Alexa, movie time")

Actions: Living room lights to 20% warm amber → TV on (if on smart plug or Fire TV) → Hallway light off → Do Not Disturb on for 2 hours

Automated Routines (No Voice Needed)

🚶 6. Motion-Activated Hallway Light

Trigger: Motion sensor activated + time condition (10pm to 7am only)
Actions: Hallway light on at 20% warm white → Turn off after 2 minutes of no motion

Setup requires: A motion sensor linked to Alexa (Wyze, Aqara, or Ring motion sensor)

📦 7. Package Alert

Trigger: Ring/Arlo/Blink camera detects motion at front door (daytime only)
Actions: Alexa announces "Movement detected at front door" on all Echo devices

🏠 8. Arrival Routine (Location trigger: you arrive home)

Actions: Hallway light on at 100% → Thermostat up to 21°C → Alexa says "Welcome home, [name]" → Security camera unarmed

Setup: Routines → + → Location → When [your name] arrives at [home address]

🚗 9. Leaving Home

Trigger: Location — when you leave home
Actions: All lights off → Thermostat down to eco mode → Front door locked → Alexa Guard armed → Notify phone "Home secured"

💊 10. Medication Reminder

Trigger: Schedule — every day at 8am and 8pm
Actions: Alexa announces "Time to take your medication" on kitchen Echo

Particularly useful for elderly family members. Can be triggered on their Echo from your account.

Smart Home Trigger Routines

🚪 11. Front Door Opened

Trigger: Door/contact sensor on front door — opened
Actions (if evening): Hallway light on at 100% for 5 minutes

🌡️ 12. Temperature Alert

Trigger: Ecobee sensor reports temperature below 15°C (in a specific room)
Actions: Alexa announces "Temperature in [room] is low" → Thermostat boosted

🔋 13. Low Battery Alert

Trigger: Any device reports low battery
Actions: Alexa announces which device needs new batteries

Note: Not all devices expose battery status to Alexa. Ring, Arlo, August, and Ecobee all do.

Weekly / Scheduled Routines

☀️ 14. Weekend Wake (Trigger: 9am Saturdays and Sundays only)

Same as weekday morning but later start, slower light ramp-up. Set repeat days: Saturday and Sunday only.

🧹 15. Cleaning Mode (Voice: "Alexa, cleaning time")

Actions: All lights to 100% cool white → Thermostat off → Alexa plays your cleaning playlist → Notifies phone when started

Advanced Routine Techniques

Conditional Triggers (Alexa Guard Required)

Add conditions to routines: "Run this routine IF it's after sunset AND the front door opened AND Guard is armed." Conditions prevent routines running at the wrong times.

Whisper Mode After Midnight

In any routine with Alexa announcements, add "Wait 1 second" then enable Whisper Mode action. Announcements will be whispered between midnight and 7am so they don't wake sleeping household members.

Chained Routines

One routine can trigger another. Arrival Routine → triggers Movie Mode if it's after 6pm. Create logic chains that adapt to context.

Multi-Room Audio Control

Use "Play [music/radio station] on [speaker group]" in routines. Create a speaker group called "Whole Home" in the Alexa app, add all Echo devices, then play music throughout the house with one routine trigger.

Creating Your First Routine — Step by Step

  1. Open Alexa app → tap More (bottom right)
  2. Tap Routines
  3. Tap + (top right)
  4. Tap Enter Routine Name → type a name
  5. Tap When this happens → choose your trigger type
  6. Tap Add action → choose from: Smart Home, Alexa Says, Music, Messaging, Wait, etc.
  7. Add as many actions as needed (they run in order)
  8. Tap Save
  9. Test it immediately
