Does the Google Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen work with Apple Home?

⏱ 3 min read
Short answer: Yes — but only the 4th Gen, and only via Matter. This is new for 2026. Google previously refused to support HomeKit on Nest products. The 4th Gen Learning Thermostat finally added Apple Home support — not through native HomeKit, but as a Matter device. Older Nest models (Learning 3rd Gen, Thermostat E, basic Nest Thermostat) still don't work with Apple Home.

How "via Matter" actually works

The Nest 4th Gen ships as a Matter-compatible device. To get it into Apple Home you need:

  • A Matter controller on your network — HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K (2nd gen+), or an iPad running as a home hub
  • The Matter QR code — printed on the back of the Nest and inside the Google Home app
  • iOS 16.1 or later on the device adding the accessory

Functionally, once added, the Nest appears in Apple Home as a standard thermostat — Siri control, setpoint changes, schedules from Apple Home all work. But it's a Matter integration, which means some Apple-Home-specific niceties may be thinner than on Ecobee's native implementation.

Setup overview

  1. Complete Nest setup in the Google Home app first (this is required for the device to provision into Matter).
  2. In the Google Home app, open device settings → Linked Matter appsLink Apple Home. This generates a Matter setup code valid for 15 minutes.
  3. Open Apple Home → tap + → Add Accessory → enter the Matter code (or scan the printed code from Google Home).
  4. Assign to a room in Apple Home.

Limits & caveats

  • Older Nest models can't be added this way. Only the 4th-Gen Learning Thermostat supports Matter; Nest Learning 3rd Gen, Thermostat E, and the basic Nest Thermostat have no Apple Home path.
  • Google account still required. You can't run the Nest in Apple Home only — Google Home setup is mandatory first.
  • Some Nest features stay in Google Home — Home/Away, Eco mode, and the learning algorithm itself run via Google. Apple Home gets setpoint control but not full feature parity with what you'd see in the Google Home app.
  • UK availability for the 4th Gen has been limited at launch — confirm regional stock before buying for Apple Home compatibility specifically.
Our verdict: Best design + learning. 4th Gen added Apple Home via Matter. If you specifically want Apple Home support, Ecobee is still the more mature choice — its HomeKit integration is native and deeper. The Nest 4th Gen makes Apple Home possible on Nest for the first time, which is a real change, but it's not a reason to switch from Ecobee.
