iRobot — the company that originally invented the consumer robot vacuum — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2025, with a Chinese manufacturer planning to acquire the business. Tom's Guide explicitly stopped recommending Roomba for new purchases. The reasons matter for buyers:
- Parts and accessory supply chain is uncertain during bankruptcy proceedings. Brush rolls, filters, batteries — anything you'd need to replace 12-24 months in — has no guaranteed continued availability.
- App and cloud-service continuity is not legally guaranteed during Chapter 11. Roomba's premium features depend on iRobot's cloud; new ownership could change subscription terms or end support for older models.
- The product itself fell behind. Even before the bankruptcy, Roomba's flagship models had been losing technical comparisons against Dreame and Roborock for two consecutive years.
If you already own a Roomba and it's working, keep using it. If you're buying new in 2026, the alternatives above outperform it on every measure and don't carry the company risk.

What to look for (and what doesn't matter)
Matters in 2026
- Lift / leg mechanisms — the genuinely new feature this year. Dreame's ProLeap, Roborock's AdaptiLift. These get the robot over thresholds and onto thick rugs that beach earlier models.
- Anti-tangle brush design — long hair (human or pet) is the #1 cause of robot vacuum failure. Dreame's HyperStream DuoBrush and Eufy's DuoSpiral are the current leaders.
- Mop-pad cleaning at the dock — hot water (>140°F) plus drying. Without this, mop pads get funky in a week.
- Obstacle avoidance vision — RTINGS' testing shows only two 2026 models avoided 90%+ of obstacles in their test: the Roborock Saros 10R/20 and the Dreame L50 Ultra.
Doesn't matter as much as marketing says
- Suction Pa numbers above ~10,000. Above that ceiling, real-world cleaning performance is governed by brush design and floor-detection, not raw Pa.
- Battery runtime claims. All flagship models in 2026 auto-return to the dock to recharge mid-clean. Total cleaning time matters; single-charge runtime is a marketing number.
- "AI" obstacle counts. "Identifies 200 objects" — the number is meaningless; what matters is the avoidance success rate in independent testing.
