How robot mowers actually work

A robot mower cuts on a schedule you set — typically every day or every other day, for short sessions rather than one long weekly cut. This matters more than it sounds: cutting a small amount frequently keeps grass shorter on average and the clippings small enough to mulch back into the lawn as fertiliser, so most owners stop bagging clippings entirely. The mower docks itself at a charging station between sessions and heads back out automatically once charged, without you doing anything.

Cutting height is usually adjustable in the app, and most current models use a small rotating blade disc rather than the traditional single long blade, which keeps the cut quieter and the mower lighter.

Wire-free models are the newer and now more common approach in current-generation mowers, and they're the better default recommendation for most gardens purely on setup convenience — but a heavily obstacle-dense garden with lots of narrow passages can still trip up GPS-based boundary mapping, where a physical wire remains more reliable.

Is your garden a good fit?

  • Lawn size under roughly half an acre — most consumer robot mowers are rated for somewhere between 0.1 and 0.5 acres; larger gardens need a higher-tier model and longer daily run time to keep up.
  • Slopes under about 35–45% — check the specific model's rated maximum incline; steeper slopes risk the mower losing traction.
  • A reasonably simple shape — narrow side-passages under about a metre wide, or a garden split into several disconnected sections, make either setup method harder and may need a second mower or manual passages.
  • No permanent standing water or very soft/boggy ground — same practical constraint as any wheeled outdoor robot.

If your garden clears these, a robot mower is a genuinely low-effort way to keep a lawn looking consistently maintained — the same appeal as a robot vacuum, just outdoors and on a longer cutting interval.

What it actually costs to run

Entry-level wire-free models start in the low hundreds; larger-area and RTK-GPS models with app-based multi-zone scheduling run considerably higher. Running cost itself is low — most mowers draw a modest amount of power per charge cycle, comparable to charging a laptop repeatedly through the season — so the real ongoing cost is blade replacement (cheap, done every few months) and, for wire-based models, occasional wire repair if it's nicked by a fork or a strimmer.

Maintenance across a season

Expect to: clean the underside and blade disc every few weeks during peak growing season, replace blades roughly every 6–8 weeks of active use, and bring the mower in (or leave it dry-docked) over winter with a full clean and blade check before storage. Most current models are rated for light rain and can be left outside at the dock, but heavy or prolonged rain is still worth pausing a scheduled cut for — check whether your model does this automatically via a rain sensor before assuming it.

Robot mower vs a regular mower — the honest trade-off

A robot mower won't out-perform a good push or ride-on mower on a single cut — it's not trying to. The value is entirely in not doing the job yourself, week after week, for an entire growing season. If you already don't mind mowing, or your garden doesn't fit the size/shape/slope profile above, a robot mower is a harder purchase to justify purely on cut quality.
