Last Updated: May 21, 2026  |  Years with Hue: 5+  |  Hue Products Tested: 20+

We've been using Philips Hue for 5+ years across multiple homes. This guide covers everything: which products to buy, which to skip, how the Bridge works, and the best automations.

Philips Hue 2025 — Setup, Tips and Best Products

Do You Need the Hue Bridge?

This is the most common Hue question. The short answer: start without it, upgrade when you want more.

FeatureWithout Bridge (Bluetooth)With Bridge (Zigbee)
Max bulbs1050
Remote access (away from home)
HomeKit support

Hue accessories (motion sensors, switches)

Buying 4+ bulbs? Get the Bridge. The Bridge immediately unlocks HomeKit, remote access, and full automations. That combination is worth £55 for any setup beyond a single room.

Which Hue Bulbs to Buy

Hue White & Color Ambiance A19/E27 Most Versatile
~$15 / ~£18

The main Hue bulb. 16 million colours, tunable white (2200K-6500K), 1100 lumens. Works in any standard lamp socket. This is the one to buy for living rooms, bedrooms, and any space where you want full colour and dimming.

Hue White Ambiance A19/E27 Best Value Hue
~$25 / ~£20 (2-pack)

Tunable white only (no colour). If you'll never change colour, this saves money. Same brightness, same reliability, same app — just no RGB. Best for kitchens, bathrooms, and utility spaces where you want smart control without the colour premium.

Hue Accessories Worth Buying

Hue Motion Sensor (~$40)

Detects motion and triggers your lights automatically. Best uses: hallway lights on when you walk through at night, bathroom lights on when you enter. Pairs directly with the Bridge without any additional setup. One of the best accessories in the Hue ecosystem.

Hue Dimmer Switch (~$25)

A physical button that controls your Hue lights without voice. Stick it on the wall anywhere — no wiring. Has 4 buttons: on, off, brighter, dimmer. Great for households where not everyone wants to use voice control or an app.

Best Hue Automations

1. Sunrise Simulation

Bedroom lights gradually brighten from 0% to 100% over 30 minutes before your alarm. Start at warm 2200K, shift to cool 6000K as you wake. Genuinely helps. Set via Hue app → Routines → Wake up.

2. Motion-Based Hallway Lighting

Motion sensor in hallway: lights turn on at 30% brightness in dim scenes (10pm-7am only), full brightness (7am-10pm). Never fumble for a switch in the dark again.

3. Away Mode

When you leave home (Hue geofencing): all lights off. When you return: entrance lights on at 100%. This one runs automatically every single day without thought.

4. Dynamic Scenes

In Hue app: Living Room → Scene → Savanna Sunset. In 2 taps your lights turn amber and warm for evening relaxation. Bookmark 3-4 scenes for instant use.

Common Hue Problems and Fixes

"My Hue light isn't responding"

  1. Check physical switch is on (most common cause)
  2. Open Hue app — is the bulb shown as unreachable?
  3. Power cycle the bulb (switch off for 10 seconds)
  4. If multiple bulbs affected: check Bridge has internet connection
  5. If Bridge offline: unplug and replug Bridge

"Hue isn't working in HomeKit"

HomeKit requires the Hue Bridge — Bluetooth-only doesn't work. In Home app → + → Add Accessory → scan Hue Bridge code (on bottom of Bridge). Bridge must be on same WiFi as your phone during setup.

FAQ

How many Hue bulbs can I have?

10 via Bluetooth only. 50 per Bridge (Zigbee). If you need more than 50, you can add a second Bridge and link it to the same Hue account.

Are Hue bulbs worth the price?

For reliability and longevity, yes. In 2+ years of testing, we've had zero Hue bulb failures. No other brand has matched that. The higher upfront cost is offset by not replacing bulbs.

Hue vs LIFX — which is actually better?

Hue if: you want HomeKit, plan a large setup (10+ bulbs), or want Hue accessories (motion sensors, switches). LIFX if: you want no hub, fewer bulbs, and are happy with Alexa or Google Home. Performance is nearly identical in testing.
