Complete Smart Lighting Guide 2026 — Bulbs, Switches, Strips and Scenes

Last Updated: May 21, 2026  |  Years of Smart Lighting: 5+

Smart lighting is where most smart homes start — and where most people make their first mistakes. This hub covers everything: which products to buy, how to set them up, the best scenes and automations, and how to avoid the common pitfalls.

Smart Lighting: Your Options

The Smart Bulb vs Smart Switch Decision

This is the most important lighting decision you'll make. Use this guide:

Use Smart Bulbs When:

  • You want colour changing or tunable white (warm to cool)
  • Only you control the switch (bedroom, home office)
  • You have a lamp or fixture with E27/B22/GU10 sockets
  • You're renting and can't touch wiring

Use Smart Switches When:

  • Multiple people use the wall switch (living room, hallway)
  • You have a ceiling fixture with multiple standard bulbs (cheaper to switch than replace all bulbs)
  • You want to keep the wall switch working normally for everyone
  • You don't need colour — just smart on/off/dimming

Best Value Strip: Govee Wi-Fi LED Strip Lights

Budget LED strips with decent app. Note: we don't recommend Govee bulbs (reliability issues) but their strips — being used for ambient effect rather than primary lighting — are less critical. Good value for TV backlighting and accent use.

The Best Smart Lighting Scenes

Scenes set multiple lights to specific states with one command. Create these in your first week:

Scene NameSettingsWhen to Use
RelaxAll lights 30%, 2700K warm amberEvening relaxation
ConcentrateDesk lamp 100%, 6000K cool whiteWork, study
MovieAccent lights 15%, warm red/amber; main lights offFilm watching
EnergiseAll lights 100%, 6500K cool daylightMorning, exercise
DimmedAll lights 20%, 3000KLate evening wind-down
BrightAll lights 100%, 4000K neutralCleaning, cooking

Smart Lighting Automations — The Full List

These are the automations that make smart lighting genuinely useful rather than just a fancy remote control:

  1. Sunset trigger: Living room to 60% warm white at sunset. Adjusts daily.
  2. Wakeup sunrise: Bedroom light from 0% to 80% over 30 minutes before alarm. Better than any alarm sound.
  3. Hallway night light: Motion sensor triggers hallway to 20% warm white (10pm-7am only).
  4. Arrival lighting: Front door opens → hallway on at 100% → auto-off after 5 minutes.
  5. Away mode: All lights off when everyone leaves. Energy and security.
  6. Occupied lighting: Room lights on when motion detected, off after 10 minutes no motion. Useful in rarely-used rooms.
  7. TV time dim: Lights dim to 15% when TV turns on (via smart plug detecting power draw).
  8. Circadian rhythm: Lights automatically shift from cool white (morning) to warm white (evening) throughout the day. Ecobee's Adaptive Lighting in HomeKit does this automatically.

Colour Temperature Guide

Kelvin (K)ColourBest For
2200-2700KVery warm / candlelightEvening relaxation, bedtime
2700-3000KWarm whiteLiving rooms, general evening use
3500-4000KNeutral whiteKitchens, bathrooms, task lighting
5000-6000KCool whiteHome office, study, exercise
6500K+DaylightColour matching, photography lighting
Set your evening automations to 2700K or warmer. Exposure to cool blue-tinted light in the 2 hours before bed suppresses melatonin production and delays sleep. Warm amber light from smart bulbs set at 2200K in the evening is measurably better for sleep quality than standard 4000K "white" LEDs.

Common Smart Lighting Mistakes

Using smart bulbs with dimmer switches. Smart bulbs need constant power. Dimmers cut power to dim. The result is flickering, connectivity drops, and bulb damage. Use standard on/off switches with smart bulbs.
Mixing smart bulbs and smart switches on the same circuit. If you have a smart dimmer switch (like Lutron Caseta) in the wall, don't also put a smart bulb in the fitting. The switch and the bulb will fight for control. Choose one or the other.
Poor naming. "Bulb 1" and "Smart Light" are unusable with voice commands. Name every bulb exactly how you'd say it: "Bedroom Ceiling", "Living Room Left", "Kitchen Under Cabinet".
