The short version: Both categories were disrupted the same way — fast-moving Chinese brands out-engineering legacy incumbents (Dreame/Roborock over iRobot indoors; Aiper/Beatbot over Dolphin/Polaris in the pool). But the buying rules differ: indoors, navigation intelligence is everything; in the pool, traction and battery are everything and "AI" claims matter far less. Spend $700-900 indoors, and around $1,000 in the pool.

What the two categories share

  • The market story. A legacy brand invented the category (iRobot indoors, Dolphin/Polaris in pools), got comfortable, and was overtaken on price and iteration speed. iRobot went into Chapter 11 in December 2025 — our Roomba guide covers why that matters to buyers. Dolphin is healthier, but losing the value argument season by season.
  • Coverage-pattern engineering. Systematic paths beat random bounce in both worlds. The cheap models in both categories still bounce randomly and miss patches.
  • The app layer. Scheduling, zone selection, and cleaning modes have become the differentiator between tiers in both categories — and both live on 2.4GHz WiFi, with all the usual pairing quirks.

What separates good from badNavigation + obstacle avoidanceTraction (wall climbing) + battery
"AI" marketing claimsPartly meaningful (obstacle recognition)Mostly noise — pools have no shoes or cables
Docks & self-emptyingTransformative — buy oneBarely exists; you rinse a filter basket

The biggest instinct to unlearn moving indoors→outdoors: don't pay for intelligence in a pool. A pool is an empty box with water in it — there are no obstacle types to recognize. Pay for drive motors, traction, and battery capacity. Indoors it's reversed: raw suction stopped mattering years ago, and the whole game is navigation.

If you're buying both in 2026

🏠 Indoors

Dreame L50 Ultra (~$799-949)

Our standing pick for most homes — flagship navigation and self-emptying at a mid-tier price. Full reasoning in the robot vacuum guide.

🏊 In the pool

Aiper Experts Duo (~$999)

Cordless dual-drive with real wall and waterline cleaning — the category's L50-Ultra-equivalent value pick. Full assessment in our Experts Duo review.

Our verdict: Treat them as different purchases with different rules. Indoors: pay for brains (Dreame L50 Ultra). Pool: pay for muscle and battery (Aiper Experts Duo). In both, the legacy-brand premium — Roomba, Dolphin — is no longer buying you the best machine.
